Are your cabins located at the lake?
Our location is along the Haines Road (Yukon Highway #3) but not on the lake shore. There are no views of the lake from our location. Currently no business is allowed to build at the lake which is within Kluane National Park.
How far is it from here to Haines Alaska?
136 miles or 220 kilometres. Highway travel requires approximately 3 hours depending on how many stops you make.
What country are we in?
You are in Canada. This is the Yukon Territory. Our time zone is Pacific Standard so we are 1 hour ahead of Alaska.
Are we on the road to Alaska?
Yes, but that depends on what part of Alaska you are heading to! If you have come from Whitehorse and are heading toward Anchorage or Fairbanks, then you are NOT on the right road. In Haines Junction, the Alaska Highway makes a 90- degree turn to head northwest. Watch for the overhead directional signs in Haines Junction.
If you are on your way to Haines, Alaska, to catch the ferry south - then yes, you are on the right road.
Are you open all year?
Not totally. The cafe is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from early November to mid March. The motel is open in the off season only when weather is favourable. There is no plumbing in the motel units during the winter. Showers and washrooms are a short walk from the rooms to the basement of the Lodge.
Do the motel rooms have cooking facilities?
No, they do not. You may bring a table-top BBQ to use outside or cook at one of the camp fire locations in the back yard. Alternatively, you may cook at the day-use shelter at Kathleen Lake. You may also bring a crock-pot to set up in the Lodge kitchen. Other than coffee or tea, there is no cooking in any form in the motel rooms.
Bear Aware - do we have bears in the vicinity?
Yes, we live in grizzly territory. This is their land - be respectful - do not attempt to get out of your car to take a photo. Keep all garbage and food articles stored in proper containers. To take a picture of the bears, please remain in your vehicle or cabin, and snap the picture from there. Black bears are often found in this area, also. Treat them the same as a grizzly - stay away - stay safe.
What time do the bears come out for photo ops?
The bears have no schedule - If you see them, you see them; if you don't, you don't. They roam wildly.
What are your cabins like?
Our cabins are designed like duplexes. There are 3 panabode-style cabins. Each cabin has 2 entirely separate, motel-style rooms. Each room has a private bathroom, 2 or 3 beds, a table and chair set, all bedding and towels. The beds are either doubles or singles - no queen or king-size beds. Each room has its own propane heater with thermostat and electricity. Some rooms have a small fridge.
What do you mean by "off the grid?"
The Haines Road has no power supplied by a local utility company. All residences and businesses on the Haines Road produce their own power. Our facility operates with a diesel generator, a bank of storage batteries, and 2 arrays of solar panels. We use the generator to charge the batteries and to provide power for the many appliances that are required for operating during the peak hours of the morning. In the afternoon, we turn the generator off and run the entire facility on the batteries and solar panels.
What is dry camping in the campground?
Dry camping means we do not supply power, water, or sani-dump station. It is like camping in a Territorial or Park's campground. We supply picnic tables, fire-pits, wood, and indoor plumbing/shower facilities.
Where is Kathleen Lake from your location?
Kathleen Lake is found by driving or walking 1/2 kilometre south on the Haines Highway to the directional sign to the lake. Turn right and follow the gravel road for approximately 1 kilometre. You will arrive at the lake and the trail head to King's Throne, Cottonwood Trail, and Kokanee Trail.
Where is Kluane National Park from your location?
The Park boundary is across the Haines Highway from us. You access the Park in this area by driving down the road to Kathleen Lake or by driving further southeast on the Haines Highway to Rock Glacier and St. Eilas Lake Trail, or by driving northwest to Auriol Trail. Please click on the Kluane National Park link on our main page to get further Park information.
And....the scariest comment/question we have ever heard - "My dream is to hug a bear - where can I go to find a bear to hug?" Our answer - "Lady, it will be the last hug you ever get!"
